Claiborne Parish Library Offers Smithsonian Institution Museum Exhibit

The Claiborne Parish Library has been selected as a site for the Smithsonian Museum on Main Street Exhibit, “Hometown Teams–How Sports Shape America”.

It will be hosted at the Claiborne Parish Library from May 7, 2016, through June 18, 2016.

The library is partnering with Main Street Homer and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities to bring this to Claiborne Parish.

The introduction to the exhibit captures the essence of sports in our lives,

“Sports are an indelible part of our culture and community.  For well over one hundred years, sports have reflected the trials and triumphs of the American experience and helped shape our national character.  Whether it’s professional sports, or those played on the collegiate or scholastic level, amateur sports or sports played by kids on the local playground, the plain fact is sports are everywhere in America.  Our love of sports begins in our hometowns–on the sandlot, at the local ball field, in the street, even.  Americans play sports everywhere.  We play pick-up games and organized league games.

Each weekend, hundreds of thousands of Americans participate in some sport, on some level.  We win and we lose, and we yearn to play another day.

And if we’re not playing, we’re watching:  in the stands, on the fields with our sons and daughters, or in our living rooms with friends in front of a television.  Football, baseball, and basketball capture our attention most, but more and more, other non-traditional sports vie for our time and support.  On any given weekend in America, sports are a big part of what we do.”

The Claiborne Parish Library invites teachers in Claiborne and surrounding parishes to visit the exhibit.  They do have limited funding for bus transportation.  There are also activities that teachers can do in their classrooms to help their students understand the concept of sports as related to their core curriculum goals.  There are six lesson plans that can be adapted for each grade level found at

Though plans and activities are designed with the exhibitions in mind, one doesn’t need to visit the exhibition to use many of these materials.  Visit the site above for more information.

Teachers, if you wish to schedule a tour of the exhibit for one of your classrooms, you may contact the library at 318-927-3845 or Main Street Homer at 318-422-2719.
